Elixir® Strings are brought to you by W.L. Gore and Associates,
an innovator in PTFE polymer since 1958 (PTFE is much like the non-stick
coating you find in baking pans). If you're a skier and a hiker like me,
you've probably used Gore-Tex® clothing for years. Now, they turn
this expertise to making polymer coatings for their Elixir® guitar
strings, and the results are striking. You don't have to spend long in
any guitar-related discussion before someone eventually begins praising
the long-lasting tone of these popular strings. It's this long-lasting
tone that has led many major guitar manufacturers to ship
their guitars already strung with Elixir® strings.
Elixir® String varieties:
Polyweb - This is Gore's original polymer formula for Elixir®
Strings. Any steel string plays bright out
of the box, and then mellows over time. These Elixir strings are designed
to produce that already-mellowed sound.
Nanoweb - This is the brighter version of Elixirs®, and in
our shop it's the better seller of the two by far. Its coating is thinner
than the Polyweb coating, which gives it a tone closer to the out-of-the-box
brightness of standard strings, as well as giving this style of Elixir®
strings a grip much more like uncoated strings. Please note that Elixir®
strings for mandolin are only available with the Nanoweb coating.
Electric - Elixir's® electric strings get their own description
here, because while the wound strings on these have always been coated
with either the Polyweb or Nanoweb coatings, now even the unwound strings
have a rust-proof coating. So, no more switching out the uncoated strings
just to keep up with the coated wound strings.
Phosphor Bronze -
This is a newer alloy for Elixir® strings. In uncoated strings,
phosphor bronze strings far outsell all other alloys, such as 80/20
or 85/15, no matter who the string manufacturer is (I prefer phosphor
bronze on all my guitars). It is also the base string for D'Addario EXPs.
At least for now, the phosphor bronze Elixir® strings are only
available with the Nanoweb coating.
We've recently introduced a new way to buy Elixir® strings, and
I think you're going to like it. The principle is simple: If you only
want to order a single set of strings, then you get our lowest possible
price for one set—and it's not just our lowest price, but the lowest
price anywhere online.
If you know you need more than a couple of sets, then the more strings
you buy, the cheaper they get. The best part is, our standard free shipping
applies even to small orders, so that you can buy a single pack of acoustic
Elixir® strings at a delivered price of less than $13. Please note
that, at least for now, bulk discounts on Elixir® strings only apply
to individual gauges. If you'd like to mix and match to get the bulk
discounts, please contact
us.
Every Elixir® string
order shipped free, regardless of size.
