Shoreline Music: Acoustic Guitars
Howard Emerson is one of those guitarists we all wish we could be. Sure, he's a gifted player and songwriter, a Martin clinician, and he has recorded with some of the best musicians around. But he actually did what most of us have only dreamed of: He dropped out of school to pursue his guitar dreams, and made them work.

When you hear his music, it's clear that his decision was not misguided. Upon first listening to Howard's guitar work, I was struck by his remarkable technical mastery. In fact, as you listen to the song clips below, you likely won't hear a single stray note or buzz. But as you begin to soak in his music, you will begin to appreciate Howard's true talent: Melody-driven songwriting. This sometimes seems like a lost art in these days of fingerstyle sprinters and showmen, many of whose songs leave you no melody to go and whistle once you turn off the iPod or CD player. Not so with Howard's music. You'll also find his songs informed by a well-honed rhythmic sense and laced with deceptively simple syncopation.

As with many of the artists we highlight here, you may buy music directly from Howard, or you can preview and download the music from the iTunes Music Store. If you do not have iTunes installed, you can click here to download it.

A Tale to Tell Howard's sophomore effort is far from sophomoric--in fact, I think I like it even better than his excellent first CD. I think it's because I find this a better showcase of Howard's playing. Tracks include: Roll Call, Flirty Skirt, Phelps Flats, The Bells of Tina's Kitchen, The Queen's Bog Roll, A Tale to Tell, Liar's Lullaby, At Every Twist and Turn, That San Francisco Freak, Maybellene, El Majestic, The Piping Plover Waltz, ...And Why Not?, When the Whistle Blows, Nokie's Blue Bottle.
