My search for great guitar cables has taken many twists and turns. If you're like me, you've used just about every brand of guitar cable under the sun, from the expensive to the cheap. Maybe you just use whatever is lying around onstage when you walk into a show. I know I've done that a number of times. The problem is, of course, that I don't find that any of these cables--either the ones I have owned or the ones I have borrowed onstage--to be what I'm looking for. Here's why: It seems that most of the really durable guitar cables tend to color your tone and are rather expensive, especially considering that they don't sound all that great. And most of the guitar cables that sound OK aren't exactly built to last, with little or no strain relief at their jacks. This is even true of the more expensive name-brand guitar cables that you see hanging in most music stores--if you've ever had to cash in the lifetime warranty on your guitar cable again and again because it repeatedly failed, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
So who, then, is making durable guitar cables that are sonically transparent? Well, first there's Kordex. I was handed my first Kordex by Dave Enke of Pickup the World, and it was the best cable I had ever heard. A lot of folks think a cable is just a cable, but as everyone who has tried a Kordex knows, the cable you're using can have a huge impact on your tone. When you A-B this with any other guitar cable you're using, you'll hear what I'm talking about.
However, if you're looking for the absolute best possible guitar cable, there is no cable--at any price--better than Zaolla. This is the standard against which all other high-end guitar cables will be judged for years to come. With its cast silver center conductor, redundant shielding, and Zaolla-designed connectors, this cable preserves every nuance of tone produced by your instrument. Yes, Kordex cables are good, far better than nearly every other guitar cable I have ever played through. But Zaolla is the ultimate. It does cost a pretty penny, but it's frankly a small price to pay for unparalleled tone, and it actually costs a lot less than those supposedly high-end cables from the big-name makers.
